FINDING OPPROTUNITIES + DESIGN THINKING

WEEK 1: MODULE INTRODUCTION FINDING OPPORTUNITIES

This week we're focusing on project brief and introduction.

3 things we're looking at creativity, innovation & design thinking.

Creativity is by generating of new ideas from existing problems and discover new opportunities. Secondly, innovation is exploitation of new ideas, process that derived from a concept into a possible profitable end result. Lastly, design thinking is a systematic development of developing ideas by understanding user.

Type of projects,Hospitality, commercial, residential, institutional & experimental. All of the projects have their own value.

There is 5 stages for design thinking but lecturer only focus on 3 inspiration, ideation + prototype.

How do we get ideas for our topic?

#1 issues - it can be environment, emotional & so on, which can benefit our project a bonus to win the project

#2 experiment - "happy accidents"

after that following by SWOT Analysis

Market demand vs User needs

Market Demand - point of view of the user, not the priority of the system, institution or organization.

User needs - understand complex experiences, needs and wishes

AEIOU

Activities - gold-directed sets of actions

Environments - include the entire arena where activities take place

Interactions - between a person and someone or something else; they are the building blocks of activitires

Objects - building blocks of the environment

Users- people whose behaviors, preferences and needs are observe

3 important phases for design thinking. When we understand the 'experience' then we will own it. We have to always think differently. Some design problem can trigger new inspiration ideas.

We can pick from issue that's happening in society or happy accident.

To be honest i myself im afraid to explore new topic but Mr Redzwan said one thing that inspire me, "we're hungry for new ideas".

Issue that's happening in society i can think of  right now is kids now days has been stuck at home without any interesting activity going on during this pandemic.

Kids and parents is hungry to go out to have do some activity.

During this pandemic parents having trouble coping with the new working environment and still have to worry for their children's emotional and so on.

Pandemic robbed away many kids in studies, doing outdoor activities.

The milestones for kids which parents can't fix. Kids stuck at home away from normal activities and stuck at home but still want to have a purpose and meaning. Being stuck at home will have anxieties. Kids may act like aloof and independent but behind the facade they might also have harboring fears. Mental health is a major issue in this pandemic, the fear of the unknown in the toughest part of experience. Especially those kids has history of depression or anxiety. Example such as:
- insomnia - sleeping changes

- eating - more or less

- self abuse - acting usual or self- harm

- body aches - aren't due to physical problem

- isolating alone

- Not participating in any activities that normally make them happy

Outside the standard framework of education, one of the main issue im looking into is how do kids catch up with curriculum activities again after this pandemic. What curriculum activities will they be interested?

There's many type of curriculum such as ballet, basketball, piano, dancing, cheerleading and so on.

The important of curriculum activities for kids.

1. Learning new skills

2. boost academic performance

3. Broader social skills

4. Improve time management

5. Impress Universities

Precedent studies in malaysia such as KidZania.

KidZania  have learning and entertainment combined perfectly 80,000sq. ft scaled replica of a real city. KidZania Kuala Lumpur is packed with over 70 role-playing activities for children, where they'll learn all about jobs, money and the real world while developing life skills that simply cannot be taught in the classroom. Target audience 4-14 years old.

Little Play Space in Penang

Target audience from 0 months to 12 years old. A place for kids to learn music, drama class, communicate creatively or write romantic story.

Another thing came on my mind is, young adult now days after graduatedconfuse on what they work as or even doesn't like to work the same field they studies after graduated. Most of them want to try something new, but afraid of failing, just like myself. It's scary to try something new, which you will not know weather will benefit your future or you're just going to waste your time.

Until today there's no activities like KidZania for adults. Many young adult would still want to try something or figure jobs they really like. Example: Student who graduated from Degree in Business but ended up want to be a pilot or maybe student who graduated from Interior Architecture but wanting to try to work as a Marketing department or someone who is already working in engineer field, but wanting to try to work/experience as a supermarket counter.

WEEK 2: DESIGN THINKING

This week week we discuss with lecturer about our .design thinking, Medium is one of the process of design thinking. Design thinking is for everyone .

Lecture also talk about end user. How we approach client in the future.

7 principle of thinking by Leonnardo Da Vinci's

1. Live Curious

2. Learn from mistake

3. Continuous refreshment of the senses - sight of enliven experience

4. Willingness to embrace ambiguity paradox + uncertainly

5. whole brain thinking - develop balance between art + science; logic + imagination

6. Cultivation of grace

7. System thinking - Recognition of and appreciate for the interconnectness of all things + phenomena

When it comes to innovation, business has much to learn from design. The philosophy in design is: "try it, prototype it, and improve it.". - Roger Dean

Thoughts before DESIGN process

- what do you see?

- what don't you see? (what if)

- Ideas should be drawn

Everyone see things differently

Design Thinking is a methodology that enables innovation to take place especially on complex form of problems. It could be processed either as tangible or intangible solutions.

empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test

Basic design process

1. Observation

2. Brainstorming

3. Prototyping

4. Implementation

WEEK 3: DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP

This week is about design thinking workshop.

What to expect?

- Increase awareness amoungst designer

- Importanance of creative

Why design thinking?

-want to make design more fun

Common three process are

inspiration, ideation + prototype

Inspiration - create idea by someone

Ideation - potentially/actually exists in the mind as product of mental activity

Prototype - early stage, model process, schematics/release of a product built to test a concept

Context

what is context?

- Solutions become more precise & purposeful

- Challenges are similar

- Context determines the types of applications to any solutions

- The issue we want to face

WEEK 4: SYSTEMS THINKING

Process of design thinking.

Idea, metaphor, model & disp.

Some of the other top design thinking involve in technology, market, design, we also talk about partnership, context and design solutions.

System thinking

is a process of understanding how things regarding system influence one another with a series as a whole. In nature of system thinking like ecosystem and food web in forest as example.

In organizations, systems consist of people, structures + processes. that work together to make an organization "healthy" or "unhealthy". System thinking had been defined as an approach to problem solving, by viewing "problems" as parts of an overall system, rather than reacting to specific part, outcomes or events and potentially contributing to further developments of unintended consequences.

System thinking is not one thing but a set of practices within a framework  that is based on the belief that the component parts of a system can best be understood in the context of relationships with each other and with other systems, rather than separation. Systems thinking focuses on cyclical rather than linear cause and effect.

The ability to see  things as a whole or holistically including the many different types of relationship between the many elements in a complex system. Dealing with the whole system+ thinking about how things interact with each other.

The next time for this topic we're going to talk about is research.

- search for knowledge

- systematic investigation to establish facts

- discovering

- interpreting

- development of methods

- systems for the advancement of human knowledge

Why research?

- Creating models

- Objective understanding

- Business and marketable goals

- Understanding user needs

What makes a good research topic?

- Interest

- Focus

- Available knowledge

- Data Availability

FORUM 3

FORUM 03: Ideas are made by combining 2 or 3 words, basically. Kindly use this methods for this ideation process. You may sketch with visuals and words. As we all know that when we go to do our shopping in the supermarket, we need a device  (basket, trolley,  grocery bag etc.) to put in our stuffs and manoeuvre our way around the aisle. Illustrate and visual what are the common issues that we face and sketch out how we can improve the shopping experience better. You may create a new system or a product for this task. You may add a statement to support your idea(s).

WEEK 6: DESIGN METHODOLOGY

Selling you ideas!

An idea is worthless until someone pays for it. Have to sell yourself.

Design ideas - How is your idea of the MEDIUM is related on your propose project? What is the connection? Drawings and diagrams are needed to show the overall process flow.

Negative Space/White Space

clear separation between graphics + text;give room to breathe

Proximity

Some linked design element; relationship or cluster; group together

Repetition

Give the design the continuous 'look +feel'-theme

Contrast

Two design elements of aspects;appearance +nature

Alignment

Grid;use it, break it, never leave without it

Focus point

Main point in the layout

Hierarchy

Visual technique that helps the viewer to navigate through your work

Flow

Directional, ways of how audience perceive/read the poster

1. Because the pandemic is currently ongoing, this is a starting point for future investigation into many choices for exhibiting and experiencing the works and activities of my project. This is where technology must be further improved, as my goals would be to have a virtual exhibition or to intend these art galleries. Having said that, I should consider this when proposing my goals and while presenting my work, I would image it to be virtually online and would who would like to create these experiences for our audiences.

2. Initially, I was inspired by famous artists such as Picasso, the Renaissance period, Greek cultural drawings and sculpture of their gods, and the history of humankind. From there, I became fascinated with Antoni Gaud's work, which was almost like an art piece, as most gothic and roman periods were. I was drawn to the iconic structures of the 18th and 19th centuries before gradually transitioning to the 20th century, which included Lebbues Wood, Cj. Lim, Will Alsop, Bryan Cantely, and Sir Howard.

Apart from their actual master piece of design and architecture work, what I was most fond of and inquisitive about was how and what they were thinking when designing this; my inspirations stemmed from their creativity, their god-like mind, inventing something so new without any references. Their philosophy was at the heart of their work, and it was this perspective on the area, society, globe, and humanity that captivated me. That combination of emotion and imagination resulted in a masterpiece. When I design, I aim to show the world how I see it and to make people aware of or inspire them to view the world as it truly is. I also design to help others and to contribute to society.  Most significantly, I aspire to be one of them or, at the the least, to raise awareness of or promote their views of real witness to society in order to generate a change of movement as they express the truth via design, as I shall.
